Wrengle downloads a speech model on first launch, about 2.9 GB, and runs it on your own machine, so a recording can become a transcript without any audio leaving your Mac. If you would rather use a cloud provider, you supply your own key and choose the provider yourself.

Supply a key for a provider you already use and Wrengle will use it. The key is stored in the operating system keychain, not in the app's own files.
Three switches stand between audio and a provider
Meeting audio only leaves when all three line up: a cloud transcription model selected in settings, cloud meeting transcription switched on, and a stored key for that provider. Live captions while you are recording stay on your machine either way.
A provider's terms still apply
If you send audio to a cloud provider, that provider's logging, retention, regional access, and billing apply to it exactly as they normally would. Wrengle does not change that and does not claim to.
What running locally costs
Meetings and dictation follow different rules, and it is worth knowing which one you are using. Cloud meeting transcription is a separate opt-in, so meeting audio stays on your machine until you turn it on. Dictation follows Automatic routing instead, and will resolve to a cloud provider whenever a speech key is connected — choose Local explicitly if nothing may leave the machine. A model running on your own machine is also bounded by that machine: speed and accuracy depend on the hardware you have, and a long recording takes real time to process. There is no hosted transcription service in this release to fall back on, and Wrengle runs on macOS 13 or later and nothing else.
None of this needs an account. Wrengle is free while it is in beta, and transcription runs whether or not you sign up. An optional account exists for identity and profile, using email or Google; the provider keys you supply live in your operating system keychain, not in that account.
